🧠 Resource Round-Up: PPA, Aphasia Research, and Online Resources

Published 2 months ago • 1 min read

It's been a minute since my last collection of resources from around the web related to medical speech pathology. I want you to know we're working hard behind the scenes and are nearly ready to share our latest development with you. If you've been following our social media, you might even be on our waitlist already!

Without further ado, here are some of the most relevant resources I've rounded up lately:

1. 👱🏾‍♀️ Wendy Williams: American broadcaster Wendy Williams has been officially diagnosed with Primary Progressive Aphasia, a form of Frontotemporal Dementia. This is the same diagnosis that actor Bruce Willis received. Learn more about PPA here.

2. 🩷 Being There for a Person with PPA: A family member of a person with PPA shares lessons about what it was like and what helped when her father was diagnosed with this degenerative communication disorder in this helpful article.

3. 📱 Aphasia Software Finder: Find the software and apps you need from an objective source in the newly-updated Aphasia Software Finder from the Tavistock Trust for Aphasia. The new look is even more aphasia-friendly!

4. 👥 Navigating Online Aphasia Groups: One positive outcome of the pandemic is the proliferation of virtual aphasia groups, but it takes special skills to facilitate these groups. This video summarizes new research on how to run a successful online group.

5. 🎞️ Supporting Emotional Recovery: A wonderful series of new short films from the UK to help healthcare professionals support the emotional recovery of people after a stroke and aphasia.

6. 💬 Picking Conversation Topics: Everyone likes to talk about different things, but in this small study, people with aphasia reached a consensus on wanting to talk about friends/family, food/drink, and living with aphasia. Words on these topics can then be incorporated into therapy.

7. 📓 Aphasia Handbook: The Stroke Foundation in Australia has released a nice PDF guide to aphasia that anyone can download. It contains information, communication boards, and resources.

8. 🥛 Dysphagia and Diets in Skilled Nursing: A new study shows that diet recommendations from acute care should not be assumed to be stable for patients in skilled nursing facilities. Use this to advocate for imaging access in your facility. The numbers are truly shocking!

9. 👀 Free DEI Course: ASHA is offering a 30-minute continuing education course to help fulfill the new Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion requirement (2 hrs every 3 years) for free to members during March.

Wishing you well,

Megan

P.S. We love when SLPs recommend apps for home practice! Be sure your clients purchase the right apps and use the ideal settings by using our Homework Prescription Pad in this free download.

Hello! I had the privilege to attend the ASHA Health Care Summit: Grand Rounds in Aphasia Management in Chicago earlier this month. This one-day conference was a collaboration with the Shirley Ryan Ability Lab, the top rehab hospital in the US. We heard some excellent presentations, so I wanted to share a few key points: The biggest clinical challenge In a poll of the 100+ speech pathologists in the audience, 53% said their biggest clinical challenge with aphasia is achieving sufficient...

Hey - how's it going? I know it's been a while since I've popped into your inbox to say hello. I've been working on a really big project that I'm getting ready to share with you early next year. In the meantime, I'd like to take a few minutes to think about written language. Of course, oral language is important. We learn to listen and understand as children before we learn to speak. It's not until we go to school that reading and writing are added as communication options. In speech-language...
